?In today’s society social media is used for many things people have a hard time staying off of social media. Social media can be positive when it is used in a mannerly way, such as, respecting other user’s privacy. This is where the problem is created, not all people use social media in a respectful responsible manner. Before social media was popular like it is now, people could browse on their internet or apps without being afraid of seeing things that is disturbing or afraid of getting hacked. As me being on the track to becoming a Middle School teacher, I know that social media plays a big part in their life. It can affect a lot of things in their life: whether or not they come to school, how they act in school, or how they participate in certain things. The purpose of my study is how can this really affect the student’s personal life and academic life.
?What is Social Media? According to Dictionary.com Social Media, is websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Now let’s think, what is social media to student’s grades K-12th? Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. While in school students usually start using social media around the age of 11 years old. With there being so many apps out there on the internet the students are open to see and learn about many things at such a young age.
?Many youths have embrace the social media life. There are many technology-based problems, but I am going to discuss two. One clear technology-based problem out of the two I am going to discuss is making fake profiles. An article that I found titled: Personal Information of Adolescents on the Internet, discussed and social media application and website by the name of Myspace; for younger people around my age and is similar to the now popular social media platform Facebook. Many parents did not allow their children to have a Facebook. Myspace was for people my age when I was in middle school, when I was reading this article it said that 57% included a picture., 27.8% listed their school, and only 8.8% revealed their full name. Can you believe that only 8.8% revealed their real names? I can believe it because I witnessed other users who I knew personally insert names that were not theirs on Myspace. The statistic of 8.8% is believable now that I am doing my research.
?Fake profiles are being created every day. These fake profiles are usually to target someone, something, or a group of people. This is where educating the youth about social media safety come to affect. Social media is a trend and many young people will create accounts to many applications without question. The things that should be brought to their attention while using social media at an early age is to not accept and request or messages from anyone they do not know. Report any suspicious profile that may leave harmful comments. Many fake profiles will not have a profile picture of themselves.
?The second clear technology-based problem is Cyberbullying. According to stopbullying.org, Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. 1 in 7 students in grades K-12 are either a bully or have been a victim of bullying. It is stated that an estimated 160,000 U.S children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation. Last but not least 35% of kids have been threatened online. 35% are scared to get online, because they never know what is going to happen to them online. This is because the lack of education for the proper use of Social Media. Cyberbullying come from mainly the Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram applications. Everybody mainly thinks that you can irresponsibility use the main social media (Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) but many young teenage boys are bullied through online game systems. The PlayStation and Xbox provides chat rooms verbally and through text, and teenage boys can irresponsibility use this, because they think nobody can check up on them and their parents would not even pay attention to the gaming system.
Social media portrays a false beauty standard in a way of living. Some examples are, Instagram models, curvy unrealistic bodies, and promoting false weight loss substances. Instagram models promotes a lavish lifestyle that is unrealistic for the age group they promote within. Such as, fancy cars, clothes, and homes. They are attracting young crowds to believe they do not have to work for anything. With plastic surgery and Photoshop on the rise, social media portrays unrealistic body goals to young women and men. The young people believe they can have a “nice body” without exercising, which can lead to obesity. Promotion of false weight substances are on the rise for social media. They promote weight loss tea that insinuates that instead of eating you drink the tea as a food substitute and instantly become skinny.
Social media has its pros and cons but I focused on the cons because the younger crowd they will outweigh the pros. The irresponsible use of social media should be use as an education tool for the younger crowd. The proper education can eliminate many problems and tragic situations involving social media. Schools should have proper classes and workshops to discuss the proper way to use social media and to detain a better understand of reality because social media continues to portray a false interpretation on life.
There are many ways the youth of this generation uses social media irresponsibility but it is our job as educators to educate them. I have hit some major points, and I hope when I become an educator I can do all the things I said in this paper.
