In 2007, Karen Sternheimer wrote an article entitled “Do Video Games Kill?” The article explores how politicians and reporters view video games. It explains how video games allegedly have a bad influence on society and blames them for today’s youth and their violent behavior.
A lot of media focus on young people and violence compared to older people and violence, according to Sternheimer. She also points out how the media have created unnecessary fear and moral panic to legitimize their personal agendas under the guise of protecting children. Sternheimer also writes, “Focusing on extremely rare and perhaps unpredictable outbursts of violence by young people discourages the public from looking closely at more typical forms of violence against young people, which is usually perpetrated by adults” (Sternheimer 188).
Sternheimer also goes into the cultural differences that video games have on the middle class youth compared to lower class. Sternheimer argues that when higher class youth are violent it is justified by video games compared to lower class.
