Throughout the modern era fats have been considered the leading cause for gaining weight. Many people have gone to try low fat diets but have seen no results. The reason being is that many people are getting rid of the healthy fats.
For many years humans waistlines have been increasing and the likely culprit seems to be fats. Fats have been misunderstood for many decades and people have been trying to get rid of fats but in reality fats have been important to humans for millions of years. As humans began to make their way out of Africa humans began putting on more fat to travel further distances without food. Fat has also served as a temporary energy source during periods with no food. “Seasonal variation in food combined with our ancestors move towards becoming highly nomadic creatures that walked several miles a day through unpredictable environments probably drove this need to store fat”(Daily mail, 2015).
Most people in today’s society consider all fats to be unhealthy but there are some healthy fats. Fats are just as important as proteins are for muscles because fats play an important role for distributing vitamins. The healthy fats that are healthy to consume come from plants and animals. Fish, nuts, avocados, milk, and red meats are all good food items to consume on a daily basis
One of the healthiest fats to consume on a regular bases are polyunsaturated fats. Polyunsaturated fats have many benefits for the heart such as lowering low density lipoprotein. Polyunsaturated fats can come from oils extracted from plants such as soybeans, corn, and sunflowers. Consuming oils from soybeans, corns and sunflowers contain fatty acids that the human body cannot produce such as omega 6 and omega 3. Omega 6 and omega 3 are fatty acids that can reduce triglyceride levels,maintain a healthy cardiovascular system, and reduce pain from arthritis. Also polyunsaturated fats can be obtained by eating nuts, seeds, soybeans and other types of plants. “Polyunsaturated fats can help reduce bad cholesterol levels in your blood which can lower your risk of heart disease and stroke”(american heart association,2017).
Another healthy type of fat are monounsaturated fats, they can be beneficial for the human body when consumed. Monounsaturated fats are proven to prevent heart diseases, reduce the chances of getting cancer, strengthen bones, and it can also help someone lose weight. “Monounsaturated fat is fatty acid with one double bond in the fatty acid chain with the remainder single-bonded”(DR.Axe,2017). Polyunsaturated fats can obtained by consuming avocados, almonds, eggs, meat and much more. Just like any other fat polyunsaturated fats can prevent many diseases such as metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is not a single diseases but a collection of other diseases such as high triglyceride levels, unnecessary fat and high blood sugar. Also monounsaturated fats can help people who have developed insulin resistance.Insulin resistance prevents the body from producing insulin at healthy levels and having insulin resistance can lead to a build up of high glucose levels which can lead to diabetes.
There is another type of fat that is not as healthy as other fats but can still be consumed on a regular basis. Saturated fats usually come from “red meat, whole milk and other whole-milk dairy foods, cheese, coconut oil, and many commercially prepared baked goods and other foods”(Harvard health,2017) A diet high in saturated fats can raise Low-density lipoprotein or commonly known as the bad cholesterol. The increase in Low-density lipoprotein can cause a blockage in the arteries which can lead to a heart attack
There are some fats that can be harmful for the human body such as industrial fats or commonly known as trans fats. Trans fats are the worst type of fats that an individual can consume. Tran fats can raise low-density lipoproteins which is the bad cholesterol and trans fats can lower High-density lipoprotein which is the healthy cholesterol.Trans fats can be found in crackers, cookies, chips, donuts, or any processed foods .Trans fats are a fatty acid that have been altered to have a longer shelf life and have been altered to have a good taste.Trans fats have been linked to cause strokes, diabetes and several heart diseases. Trans fats clog arteries which can lead to a disease such as a stroke and the reason being is that trans fats raise low-density lipoprotein which leads to the build up of fats in the arteries.Trans fats can be found in many restaurants where food is deep fried.Trans fats are used in restaurants because trans fats can be used longer for deep frying foods than other types of oils. There are some healthy trans fats that are healthy to consume such as dairy and some red meats. Today’s modern trans fats are “formed through an industrial process that adds hydrogen(mayo clinic,2017).
Fats go through many stages of the human body from the mouth to the small intestine. Obviously for fat to be in the body it has to be consumed through the mouth.Consuming fats begins when the food enters the mouth, the mouth breaks down the food and the saliva softens the food so it can be swallowed. The food travels down the esophagus and multiple muscles in the esophagus move the food down into the stomach. Then the food gets digested in the stomach chamber and the nutrients go to the small intestine. The small intestine has enzymes called lipase which break down fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Before the lipase break down the fats the liver produces bile, “these digestive juices are delivered to your small intestine through ducts”(healthline,2018) . “Biles breaks the fat into small droplets that are easier for the lipase enzymes to work on”(BBC,2014).Then after the fat has been broken down the fat is stored in cells called adipocytes.The main purpose of adipocytes cells is to store fat under the human skin.
In summary not all fats have a negative impact on the body. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are the one of the healthier fats and can reduce the chances of many health complications. Fats are important for human survival because fats can serve as a temporary energy source. Fats can utilized in many other ways throughout the body, and a certain amount of fat is needed for the human body to function properly.
